Oxnard Community Service

For over ninety-five years Oxnard Post 48 has provided a wide assortment of services to our community and its veterans. Here's a list of some of these services;
Veterans emergency assistance:

Post 48 offers emergency funds of $50.00 to cover short term needs to any veteran in need with proof of service upon their request.

For over seven years Post 48 has provided clothing, toiletries, volunteers, and financial contributions to Ventura County Stand Down. The Ventura County Stand Down is a two and a half day program to provide a safe place to sleep, eat and receive a wide variety of resources to our counties homeless veterans. The centerpiece of our effort at Stand Down is the breakfast that is provided the first morning of the veterans' stay. Additionally several American Legion members serve as Committee Chairs on various resource committees.

Our close proximity to Ventura County Navy Base affords us an opportunity to stand a flag line and greet servicemen and women who are returning from deployment. Additionally we provide volunteer services to cook and serve meals at both pre-deployment and post-deployment events. We also provide a motorcycle escort for the busses of servicemen and women without local families returning to their home base.

Every year the Oxnard Post participates in Seabee Battalion Christmas programs for which our post provides a Santa and a new unwrapped toy for each child. In 2013 we provided toys for over 90 children.

Annually Oxnard Post 48 provides a motorcycle safety escort to the Ride 2 Recovery California Challenge. Ride to Recovery is a program to help rehabilitate wounded veterans and veterans who suffer from PTSD. The five-day veterans' bicycle ride begins in San Francisco and ends at the Santa Monica pier. In addition to the motorcycle safety escort Post 48 provides a dinner during their overnight stop in Ventura, feeding over 200 participants.

The Community:

Our post provides support on behalf of the City of Oxnard for Veterans Day program at Plaza Park. The post organizes guest and keynote speakers as well as providing the color guard for the event.

Every year during the Christmas holidays the Legion Post 48 families conduct a food drive and dispense much needed food and toys directly to dozens of needy families who otherwise would not be able to have a Christmas Dinner or toys for their children.

Our post provides Color and Honor Guards at a variety of events and functions, including veteran funeral services, veteran funeral motorcycle escorts, community events, convalescent homes and our local veteran's home.
