Post 48 charter member and first Adjutant.

The American Legion Oxnard Post 48 received its charter in 1919 and was originally called the Ventura County Post 48. Post 48 has been serving Oxnard and Ventura County veterans and the community for over ninety five years now. By 1934 the expanding cities within Ventura County and a growing membership resulted in the Post dividing into two posts thus creating the Ventura Post 339. The Post 48 charter was amended to become the Oxnard Post.

The American Legion itself had its humble beginnings in 1919 in Paris France at the close of World War I. The vision of four veterans one of which was Theodore Roosevelt Jr. the son of Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th President of the United States. Their vision for a veterans organization led by veterans to deal with a verity of issues dealing with members of the armed forces returning home from the war. This effort culminated on September 16, 1919 when Congress chartered the American Legion under Title 36 of the United States Code as an official American patriotic society.

One of the very first efforts of the newly established American Legion was August 9, 1921. The Legion's efforts result in the creation of the U.S. Veterans Bureau, forerunner of the Veterans Administration.
December 15, 1943, Past National Commander Harry W. Colmery starts to write in longhand, on Mayflower Hotel stationery in Washington, the first draft of what will later become the "GI Bill of Rights" considered the Legion's single greatest legislative achievement.

In addition to providing a wide variety of programs to benefit our community, the state and the nation, the American Legion continues to lobby to preserve and create new benefits for veterans.
